Division of High Polymer Physics

May 15, 1996 Newsletter

Early Nomination Deadline: High Polymer Physics Prize and Dillon Medal

As was announced in the previous newsletter, nominations for the APS High Polymer Physics Prize, sponsored by Ford Motor Company, and for the Dillon Medal are due by June 1. This earlier deadline will allow more time for processing by the APS and for planning the symposia for the March Meeting. Because this represents a new deadline (and it may be after the deadline when you receive this reminder), FOR THIS YEAR ONLY nominations will be accepted until June 21, 1996. Nominations and supporting information should be sent (as soon as possible) to Jeff Koberstein at the address on the letterhead.

Division Councillor Elections Call for Nominations

As was announced at the DHPP Business Meeting in St. Louis, the term of office for the DHPP Division Councillor expires on 12/31/96. Two individuals have been nominated to run for this position. They are:
A J. Lovinger, National Science Foundation, and. E. J. Kramer, Cornell University.
Additional nominations from DHPP members are hereby invited. According to the DHPP By-Laws, a person may be nominated if suggested by 1% of the membership. Currently, a petition with the signatures of 12 members is needed. Nominations should be sent to the Secretary-Treasurer as soon as possible, and no later than June 21, 1996.

    Membership

Your APS membership renewal is eminent. Now would be an excellent time to be sure to renew/add membership in DHPP and to twist the arms of any nearby APS members to do likewise. Enclosed with this newsletter is an application for regular APS Membership and an application for a Free Trial Membership For Students. Both Graduate students and undergraduate students are eligible for the free membership. Please make as many copies as you need and ask your friends, colleagues, and students to join the DHPP. (Note: If you have obtained the application from elsewhere, be sure to write in DHPP under Units.) Help the Division solve its 3% problem, once and for all. If each member just enlisted one person, we'd

Double the Division! Sign up a friend.

    DHPP Home Page

The DHPP home page is now operational. You may access it through the APS Home Page at http://aps.org (then select APS Divisions, Sections and Forums and then DHPP)
    or at
http://kelvin.seas.virginia.edu/?blf2v/dhpp.cfm Please send (to the Secretary-Treasurer) your comments, corrections, and suggestions for additional information that you would like to see included. Suggestions for links to other web sites are welcome.

    E-Mail Broadcasting

Announcements of newsletter availability, election results, important postings to the DHPP Home Page, and news of special interest to DHPP members will be broadcast to DHPP members who have provided their e-mail addresses to the APS. If you have not yet done so, please send the APS (or the DHPP Secretary-Treasurer) your e-mail address. (NOTE: If you did not receive advance notice of this newsletter by e-mail, then your name is not on the APS' list of e-mail addresses for DHPP members!)

    DHPP Short Course

The DHPP Short Course, NMR Methods in Polymer Physics, will be offerred March 15-16, 1997 in Kansas City, MO. It is being organized by Julie Kornfield (Cal Tech).

    Program

The DHPP Program Chair for the next March Meeting is Ken Shull (Northwestern; Phone: 847-467-1752; Fax: 847-491-7820; E-mail: k-shull@nwu.edu). He solicits your suggestions for (and participation in helping organize) Special Focused Sessions, especially in areas of interest to polymer physicists in industry. He would also welcome suggestions (or volunteers) for Session Chairs.

Reminder: You are urged to submit your abstracts for the March meeting as early as possible to allow ample time for the program to be organized. The DHPP deadline will be the same as for the APS general program - December 6, 1996. (Nominations and abstracts for the Padden Award and Symposium are due November 6, 1996.)

    Fellowship

Members of the Division are invited to submit nominations for Fellowship in the APS. A nomination form and a list of DHPP members who are APS Fellows are available on the DHPP Home Page or from the Secretary-Treasurer. Full dossiers should be mailed to:
Executive Officer American Physical Society One Physics Ellipse College Park, MD 20749-3844
The deadline is January 15, 1997. The DHPP Fellowship Committee will review nominees and forward its recommendations to the APS Council, which elects new Fellows annually at its November meeting. The number of new Fellows is limited to one-half percent of the current member, ship.
