APS Constitutional Amendment Two
If you have not already done so, please be sure to return your ballot on the APS Constitutional Amendments. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU VOTE "YES" ON CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TWO. This is the Amendment that Andy Lovinger discussed at the 1997 March Meeting. It would essentially remove the threat of the Division of High Polymer Physics being demoted to a Topical Group. The Amendment requires affirmative votes from 2/3 of those voting. Therefore, please be sure to vote, and encourage your colleagues to do so as well. This is a unique opportunity to help assure the future success of the DHPP.

Program
The next March Meeting will be held in Los Angeles, CA the week of March 16-20, 1998.
The DHPP Program Chair is M. Muthukumar (U. Mass., e-mail: mdhpp@kali.pse.umass.edu). Symposia are being planned with the following themes: nanostructures, electronic properties, adhesion, processing, and complex fluids. These topics have been selected after input from many DHPP members. Members are encouraged to contribute papers in these areas and to continue to communicate with Muthu or other members of the Program Committee regarding things they would like to see in the program in the future. Muthu has also created a website bulletin board for DHPP members to post and share information (http://rati.pse.umass.ude/mdhpp/).
Reminder: The final assembly of the DHPP program by the Program Committee occurs at a meeting early in December. You are urged to submit your abstracts for the March meeting as early as possible to allow time before this meeting for the program to be organized. Abstracts should be submitted via e-mail according to the guidelines available from the APS or DHPP Home Pages, or from the DHPP Secretary-Treasurer. The DHPP deadline is the same as for the APS general program - December 3, 1997. (Nominations and abstracts for the Padden Award and Symposium are due November 3, 1997.)
Short Course
A DHPP Short Course, Polymers in Electronics Applications, will be offered March 14-15, 1998 in Los Angeles, CA. It is being organized by Wen-Li Wu (phone: 301-975-6839; fax: 301-869-3239;
e-mail: wenli@nist.gov) and Michael Schen (phone: 301-975-6741; fax: 301-869-3239; e-mail: michael.schen@nist.gov). Details will be available on the DHPP Home Page early in August.
Membership
Your APS membership renewal is due. Now would be an excellent time to be sure to renew/add membership in DHPP and to twist the arms of any nearby APS members to do likewise. Applications for regular APS membership are available on the APS Home Page. Enclosed with this newsletter is an application for a Free Trial Membership For Students. Both graduate students and undergraduate students are eligible for the free membership. Please make as many copies as you need and ask your friends, colleagues, and students to join the DHPP.
Centennial Program
The DHPP is proposing to have two special sessions at the APS Centennial Meeting, March 20-26, 1999 in Atlanta, GA. These are (tentatively): "Milestones in Polymer Physics" and "Polymer Physics in the 21st Century." A list of DHPP speakers will be included in an APS "Speakers Booklet". Exhibits and a wall chart are also being planned. Charles Han (NIST), the DHPP Centennial Representative, and Wes Burghardt (Northwestern), the 1999 Program Chair, welcome your suggestions (and assistance) for these or additional activities.
Fellowship
Members of the Division are invited to submit nominations for Fellowship in the APS. A nomination form and a list of DHPP members who are APS Fellows are available on the DHPP Home Page or from the Secretary-Treasurer. Full dossiers should be mailed to:
Executive Officer
American Physical Society
One Physics Ellipse
College Park, MD 20749-3844
The deadline is January 15, 1998. The DHPP Fellowship Committee will review nominees and forward its recommendations to the APS Council, which elects new Fellows annually at its November meeting. The number of new Fellows is limited to one-half percent of the current membership.
