    Executive Committee Election Results

In the recent DHPP Executive Committee elections, Ken Schweizer (University of Illinois) was elected Vice Chair and Sanat Kumar (Pennsylvania State University) was elected Member-at-Large. The Executive Committee extends its congratulations to them and its appreciation to all the candidates for their willingness to serve the Division.

    1998 March Meeting

By the time you receive this in the mail, the program for the DHPP March Meeting (Los Angeles, March 16-20, 1998) will be available on the DHPP Home Page, and the program booklet should be on its way to your mailbox. The Division is indebted to M. Muthukumar, this year's Program Chair, for the excellent job he has done in overseeing the organization of the program. The program includes a session on Tuesday morning in his honor as winner of the High Polymer Physics Prize (sponsored by Ford Motor Company). A session on Tuesday afternoon will honor Spiros Anastasiadis, winner of the Dillon Medal (sponsored by Elsevier Science Ltd., publisher of Polymer). A session featuring graduate students nominated for the Padden Award is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday. In addition there will be 5 focused DHPP symposia, each consisting of 5 invited speakers. The titles of these symposia are: Electronic/Optical Properties, Nanostructures, Processing, Biopolymers, Patterned Surfaces.

Ford Prize and Dillon Medal Reception

There will be a reception honoring M. Muthukumar and Spiros Anastasiadis immediately following the DHPP Business Meeting on Tuesday, March 17, 1998 in Los Angeles.

    DHPP Business Meeting

The Division will hold its annual Business Meeting on Tuesday, March 17, 1998 in Room 403B of the Los Angeles Convention Center. The meeting will begin at about 5:30 (following the technical sessions).

    NEW Event - DHPP Reception

On Sunday evening, March 15, in Los Angeles, there will be an informal reception to give DHPP Members a chance to meet and chat. Refreshments will be served. Time and place will be announced by email and posted on the DHPP Home Page. Please plan to stop by.

DHPP Membership Directory Coming Soon -- Interest Area Information Needed

In March, 1998, a new DHPP membership directory will be available (thanks to the laudable efforts of Mark Ediger). In order to save the substantial costs associated with printing and mailing, the new directory will be "published" electronically. DHPP members will be free to print their own hard copy if they wish to do so. Instructions explaining how to download the directory will be provided later.

In order to make the new directory as useful as possible, we would like to have all DHPP members supply interest area information which will be published with the directory. This information will be collected electronically. You can enter your interest area information by:

    1. clicking DHPP Directory Update on the DHPP Home Page; OR
    2. clicking Membership on the APS home page (then select Unit Directory); OR
    3. going directly to /memb/unitdir.cfm.

For security, your APS member number will be required. (Your membership number appears on the mailing label used for this newsletter.) In order for your interest area information to be included in the directory, you will need to enter it by February 23, 1998.

An electronic membership directory does offer the possibility for abuse (e.g., junk e-mail). Everyone who downloads the directory will do so only after agreeing that this information is for individual use only and not to be used for bulk mailings. Measures will be taken to limit the distribution of the directory to DHPP members, but we cannot guarantee that it won't be used in ways which will annoy us. If you do not wish to be included in the electronic membership directory, you may indicate this at the interest area website or by contacting Mark Ediger [608-262-7273 e-mail: ediger@chem.wisc.edu]. Any DHPP members who have previously indicated that they do not wish to be part of the APS directory will be excluded from the DHPP directory.

Special Issue: Journal of Polymer Science, Polymer Physics Edition

A special issue of Journal of Polymer Science, Polymer Physics Edition will publish papers presented at the March Meeting of the Division. There are no page charges for the journal, and authors receive a copy of the issue as well as 50 reprints free of charge. All manuscripts will be peer reviewed. Those accepted for publication within a limited time after the March meeting will appear together in the December issue of the Journal. Manuscripts submitted for the 1998 special issue are due by April 1, 1998 and should be sent to: Mark D. Ediger, Dept. of Chemistry, University of Wisconsin, 1101 University Avenue, Madison, WI 53706. Tel: (608) 262-7273; Fax: (608) 262-0381; E-mail: ediger@chem.wisc.edu

Short Course: Challenges in Polymer Research for Microelectronics Technologies

The DHPP Short Course will be offered March 14-15, 1998 in Los Angeles, CA. Fee: $400 regular ($200 students). To allow better planning of the course, participants are urged to register by Feb. 15, 1998.

Description: This short course will provide polymer scientists and engineers with an in-depth view of the uses of polymers in various electronics products. It will address industry's most pressing technical needs and illustrate the types of research needed to enhance the role of polymers in future products. Participants will develop an understanding of the technical drivers and underlying scientific challenges associated with the utilization of polymers in current and future electronic products.
