Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.
Yes, there is a family leave policy available to graduate students with a 50% time appointment.
Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?
Family health insurance is available to students with graduate assistantships and fellowships. It is not part of the stipend but is very reasonably priced.
Do you have a Woman in Physics Group? If yes, please include link to their website if they have one.
Do you have a Physics Graduate Student Association? If yes, please include link to their website if they have one.
What other relevant student groups are there in your institution?
There is a Grad Student Association (not just physics), but no website. One of our graduating MS students (in 2019) helped form it (she happened to be female).
There is an active Physics Club/SPS chapter, which includes grad students: https://sites.google.com/d.umn.edu/physics-club/home
Has your institution ever hosted a Conference for Undergraduate Women in Physics? If yes, which year?
Not here in Duluth, but the UofM system is hosting one in 2020 in Minneapolis.
Has your institution ever hosted an APS Climate Site Visit for Women and Minorities in Physics?
Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.
We are small enough to be very flexible and accommodating, and would love for someone with this interest to help us shape our future department. Women have been having success in our program - contact us with specific question, or if you want to compare notes with people who are already here.
Something else to note:
We haven't been able to search for a tenure-track position in years, but three of our recent term faculty hires are women, so we're doing what we can on faculty gender equity.
Please include the name of faculty or staff member and an email they can be reached at for further questions.
Alec Habig (firstname.lastname@example.org) is the Director of Graduate Studies for UMD Physics.
