Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

Yes, we have the UCLA Childbirth Accommodation Fund for graduate student researchers (GSRs) and for fellowship holders. Six weeks of maternity leave funding are automatically granted for expectant mothers holding UCLA Fellowships, Graduate Division Endowed Fellowships or fellowships offered by academic departments and centers at UCLA.

Also, a student holding a TAship is eligible to receive up to six (6) weeks of paid leave for pregnancy, childbirth or related medical conditions for the period prior to, during and after childbirth (refer to Article 17 Leaves of the University of California and the UAW contract).

Other Maternity Benefits at UCLA
Research doctoral students who are undergoing childbirth or coping with other serious parenting demands are allowed additional time to meet established deadlines for passing preliminary and/or qualifying examinations and completing their dissertations. Fee remissions only cover health insurance for an individual student. Dependent coverage is separate from student coverage and is not covered by fee remissions and must be purchased separately.

The UCLA Department of Physics and Astronomy is committed to promoting and fostering a diverse and inclusive environment of learners because we believe that diversity promotes innovation. We are dedicated to supporting and engaging faculty and students from a broad array of backgrounds and experiences to tackle some of the biggest questions in astronomy and physics. The Department strives for an environment of respect for all its members, who share the common purpose of the study of physics and astronomy. To pursue our goal of inclusiveness, we have created a Department Diversity Committee composed of faculty, students and staff whose mission is to promote a warm and welcoming culture for everyone. The Graduate Physics and Astronomy Association coordinate a peer-to-peer mentoring program, organize quarterly socials and weekly tea/coffee mingles between faculty and graduate students. We also have a Womxn in Physics and Astronomy (WiPA) group and an Outreach committee that coordinate social and educational events throughout the year. In conjunction with the UCLA Career Center, the department has been offering professional development workshops that include academic and industry career panels. As a teaching assistant, we actively promote the use of inclusive teaching practices in coordination with the Center for the Advancement of Teaching.
