Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.

Is there a family leave policy for graduate students? If so, describe.
The accommodation provides students with a semester (16 weeks) to adjust to new parenthood. It is not a leave of absence; it is an accommodation. Students maintain their standing as students and are eligible for financial support. Departments are encouraged to work out specific arrangements with students, on a case-by-case basis, within the broad framework of this policy.

Is there family health insurance for graduate students? If so, is it included in the stipend?

If dependent health insurance is desired, dependents of the student have a choice of an optional plan. Only Notre Dame students may use the medical services provided at Saint Liam Hall Health Services; however, dependents may have prescriptions filled at the University Health Services pharmacy according to University policy and their plan benefits.

Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

The Physics Department at Notre Dame strives to maintain an open, collaborative environment where students of all identities, backgrounds, and affiliations are accepted and welcomed. We have a long history of supporting female faculty and students, and our percentage of female graduate students typically exceeds the national average.

All graduate students in our department benefit from the number and quality of active research groups led by women, and from the range of professional development, family support, and counseling services offered through the Graduate School. Our newly updated physics graduate program requirements include a reduced courseload and a committee mentoring structure that provides greater transparency and accountability in formal advising relationships. Female graduate students take advantage of both informal social and mentoring opportunities within the department and formal mentoring and diversity programming through the Association for Women in Science at Notre Dame (AWIS).

Please include the name of faculty or staff member and an email they can be reached at for further questions.
