Please describe why someone applying to graduate school who is interested in a female-friendly department should choose your department.

Our department is committed to providing opportunities and a supportive environment for all graduate students, and makes special efforts to allow female students to achieve their full potential as scientists. Women in Physics and Astronomy, WIPHA (, is a local organization that connects female undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and faculty in an informal mentoring network. The department sponsors monthly WIPHA lunches where members can discuss science, career issues and related topics in an informal setting. The department overall has a relatively young faculty, a high level of research activity, and a strong tradition of collegiality at all levels. Our institution is committed to fostering diversity in all dimensions of university life.
